During the pre-season, I had the opportunity to interview Anthony Davis in New Orleans while covering his final season with the Pelicans. It was on this occasion that I witnessed the Raptors, who had recently acquired Leonard, take on the Pelicans. The team was in top form, leaving a lasting impression. Among the standout players was Pascal Siakam, who had rarely been seen on the court for more than eight minutes in a half before this game. He dominated the court, showcasing his exceptional skills. Leonard delivered a remarkable performance, while VanVleet also contributed significantly to the team's success.
Upon attending the Rockets' match in Macau, I was struck by a comparable sensation. Our previous trips to Australia and Manila were filled with numerous other attractions, such as keeping an eye on Irving's performance and witnessing Flagg play live for the first time. However, upon spotting the Rockets on the opposite side of the court, my immediate thought was, 'Hold on, this team seems genuinely distinct.' We also engaged in conversations with Jabaari Smith Jr. and the team's general manager, Raphael Stone. There's an aura about this Rockets squad that reminds me of the Toronto Raptors from yesteryears. They possess a genuine chance, a legitimate shot at contention. Let me tell you, even before the Thunder encountered injury issues, I harbored this belief. Now, while many point to the Thunder's injuries as an excuse, I had already concluded this much earlier.
